Spring Collection
I've always loved the Palissade lounge chair by the Bouroullec brothers (especially the hot galvanized version). The whole collection is beautiful. Simple bent metal strips form the seat and create an iconic collection that reminds me of a classic park bench. I remember sitting in one for the first time and the rigidity of the metal wasn’t as pleasing as the aesthetics. It’s a tough challenge to create comfortable metal furniture that is both economical and beautiful.
I've been wanting to design my own metal outdoor collection ever since. I started thinking about how to add more flexibility and stumbled upon the humble torsion spring, a simple loop of metal wire found in all kinds of mechanisms from mousetraps to safety pins. I felt it was the perfect mechanism to explore.
Using torsion springs in outdoor furniture isn’t new. I remember one of my friends growing up had these old wrought iron chairs that rocked back and forth with a spring.
I explored many variations and placements of the spring in VR and eventually settled on a simple loop connecting the seat to the backrest. It adds a bit of flexibility and creates this delightful moment in the chair. A lot of refinement went into to also making the chair stackable. Stackability is a great way to lower the cost and energy for shipping as well as save space at a local cafe or restaurant.
The final Spring collection consists of a chair and a small table, perfect for a cafe or garden. The simple looping element can be carried through to other possible pieces like a lounge chair or side table. The collection could come in a variety of finishes including wire mesh or upholstered seats. This concept is available to be licensed and manufactured. Please reach out if you are interested.
Each iteration of the Spring collection is available to mint for .02 ETH.
