A few years ago during Milan Design Week, I had the privilege of meeting Wojciech Błaszczyk of Sedno Studio. Wojciech extended an invitation to design a sofa collection for Kler, a well-established and respected furniture manufacturer in Poland. Wojciech was in charge of art directing a line of contemporary sofas to infuse new ideas and young designers into the company's rich heritage.
I was traveling at the time and always get the window seat when I fly. It never gets old to me, gazing out the window and admiring the clouds below. It got me thinking, as I’m sure many have, how wonderful would it be to lay down on clouds? What would a sofa look like if it were designed to create the feeling of weightlessness? Inspired, I created a concept around the idea of cushions floating in the sky. I envisioned fabric inflating and floating away like a balloon while the steel legs of the sofa came down to anchor everything in place, resulting in a billowing shape that folded up and around the frame.
Kler was thrilled with the idea and development quickly got underway. Throughout the process Wojciech and I worked closely together, reviewing prototypes and refining the details. I visited Kler's factory in 2022 to approve the final prototype and deliver a presentation about the design at Poland's design festival. We toured Kler’s impressive factory and watched wood, fabric, and foam turn into beautiful sofas. After finalizing the collection, Kler began production and now sells the sofa system around Europe.
The Daze collection features several voluminous cushions that appear to float above the ground anchored down by bent steel legs. The collection is comprised of multiple modular and standalone pieces that can be arranged in a variety of configurations. Kler offers the system in several fabrics and finishes allowing for full customization.
A huge thanks to Kler and Sedno Studio for bringing this project to life. I also want to thank Derek Elliott for his exceptional animation and rendering work. Lastly, thank you to Aaron Kalupa for the beautiful atmospheric sound design.
